Care
Readers interested in child/family issues and Los Angeles History might consider reaching out to the following organizations. (Note: The author is not employed by or sponsored by any of these groups.)
Covenant House
Many youths arrive in Los Angeles and Hollywood every year. Some are on the run from family problems. Some have dreams of stardom. Some simply have nowhere else to go. They don't have a plan or place to stay, and are not prepared to cope with life in a strange and challenging city. And this doesn't just happen in L.A. It happens all over the U.S. Covenant House is a non-profit organization that provides shelter and assistance to youth who need it. www.covenanthouse.org
Make-A-Wish Foundation
There are so many ways to help this organization, which is dedicated to granting wishes for children with life-threatening medical issues. You can give, fundraise, sponsor, or volunteer to make a child's dream come true. http://wish.org/
Union Rescue Mission
Homelessness is a reality for millions of Americans, including children. More and more this includes families that "did everything right" - working, paying taxes, voting, volunteering - but were overwhelmed by the economic challenges that began in 2008 and almost spiralled into another Great Depression. A second Great Depression was staved off, but millions are still grappling with unimaginable poverty, their voices lost in a media din. Organizations like Union Rescue Mission offer real hope to families and individuals who find themselves on the street. http://urm.org/
Los Angeles Conservancy
Dedicated to preserving the architectural, cultural, and historical treasures of L.A., the Los Angeles conservancy has been responsible for saving, restoring, and revitalizing neighborhoods and individual gems like the Central Library. A non-profit membership organization. www.laconservancy.org
